The Humpback whales that swim past Surfers Paradise each year spend their summer months feeding in the Antarctic. In winter the Humpback whales swim over 3000 km from cold polar waters to their tropical breeding grounds on the Great Barrier Reef.
In winter Antarctic food becomes scarce. The waters are too cold for these warm-blooded animals. This is one of the longest migrations in the animal kingdom. The Humpback whales stay close to shoreline so it is easy to see them.
The whales breeding season is over a six month period but as they swim they do not actively feed. The cold water will kill the new baby whales as they are born without the insulating layer of blubber. To make sure the baby whale calves survive their mothers produce over 600 liters of extremely rich milk per day.
As the young whale calves make their first migratory journey back to Antarctica there are many dangers for them. Sharks, Killer whales and fishing nets while some die of exhaustion. The calves save their energy by swimming in their mother’s wake. The young baby whale calves position themselves just behind their mother and beside her dorsal fin. The water flowing between their bodies increases in velocity and decreases the pressure so the young calf can keep up with its mother.
As the whale’s head home September is the peak month for the southward migration. This is the time you are most likely to see the baby humpbacks that were born a few weeks earlier on the Great Barrier Reef.
The whales travel in small groups and it takes over 3 months for them all to pass Surfers Paradise beach each way. We are in great whale watching territory in Surfers Paradise .
You have about 3 months to see the baby whales.
